Mysterious legends associate not only with ancient fortress, but also with some abandoned old hospitals. One of them is Renwick Smallpox Hospital, Roosevelt Island, US. The hospital named after its creator, James Renwick, is among the prominent landmarks of the state. Prisoners of a nearby prison were involved construction of the hospital. The facility was opened in 1856.
Originally this medical institution was focused on smallpox patients, so not all of thousands inmates were able to leave it. According to statistics, about 7,000 patients have been treated in the hospital every year; more than 450 people of them died yearly. The hospital operated until 1973, and then come to desolation. Nowadays this once grand building in the Gothic Revival style is inevitably collapsing.
