Its construction began in 1817 with the intention to link the Great Lakes with the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean. The canal was completed in a little more than 7 years and had a length of 540000 metres. In 1825 the Erie Canal was open for navigation. Economic gains have accrued tremendously from that use, the canal has reduced the previous costs by over 95%.
Until the mid-20th century the Erie canal remained indispensable waterway that connected a number of cities in the country. Today this amazing waterway, still fully operational, has become a recreational highway. The canal has steadily been improved and enlarged, and finally became pretty significant in size. The average width of the canal is 50 metres. There are 35 gateways throughout the route. Huge watercourse, whose opening has facilitated the development of the internal parts of the USA, is very popular among tourists nowadays.
