Wolfe Creek Crater, Australia
From series “Largest Meteorite Craters on Earth”
Travelers who want to see another well-preserved meteorite crater, should go to the North and Central Australia. Here, among the desert landscapes, they will found the stunning Wolfe Creek crater formed about 300 000 years ago. The structure is about 880 meters in diameter and up to 60 meters deep. The crater is located among vast desert lands. The structure of the crater was strongly influenced by dune sand, but still retains a sharp-cut form.
Scientists discovered Wolfe Creek in 1947, while local residents have got one of the main secrets of the desert much earlier. The meteorite impact origin of this crater has no doubt, as meteorite fragments have been found during the research. The total weight of pieces was about 400 kg. The unique crater became largely famous for the horror film, Wolf Creek, which takes place in the area of the crater.
