From series “The Most Inaccessible Spots of the Planet”
In the South Atlantic you can find an interesting, hard-to-reach island - Bouvetinsel. His discoverer was the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier, who discovered the island in 1739. Since 1928 the distant island belongs to Norway. The incredibly beautiful snow-white island, almost whole of whose territory is covered with glaciers, is uninhabited.
The scientists say that the island has formed about 2,000 years ago, after the outbreak of a shield vulkan. According to the unofficial data, Bouvetinsel was used in the second half of the 20th century for nuclear experiments. At present, the automatic weather station is located on the isterritory. The mainland to the island is Antarctica, which is located approximately 1 600 km from the coasts of Bouvet Island. The nearest settlement is Cape Town, the road to which about 2 500 km forms.
