Caerphilly Castle, United Kingdom
From series “Impressive Castles and Palaces Located on Water”Year: 13th century.
In the tiny English town of Caerphilly is the world-famous landmark - the castle of the same name, built in the second half of the 13th century. This is a typical example of Norman architecture and is considered to be the largest castle of Wales for more than seven centuries. Throughout the country, the castle occupies second place and is located only after Windsor Castle.
The impregnable fortress lost its strategic importance a few years after completion of the construction work, in 1282, when Wales was finally united to England. Already in the 14th century the huge building was abandoned and stood empty until the end of the 18th century. The renovation work was conducted by Marquess of Bute. In the middle of the 20th century, the castle fell to the state and now belongs to the Cadw Society. In a part of the historical building, the museum was set up, which is dedicated to the castles of Wales.
