Tehri Dam, India
From series “The Greatest Dams in the World”Year: 2006. Height: 261 meters.
Tehri is the highest dam in India. It was built on the Bhagirati River and is considered to be one of the largest litter dams in the world. For its construction one did not use the concrete and the metal constructions, but the ordinary materials of natural origin: earth and stones. The height of the throw is 261 meters. Since the dam is near the Tehri city, it attracts the numerous tourists since the opening.
The ecologists believe that the construction of such a huge energy complex in the Himalayan pre-mountain regions would have a negative impact on the ecosystem of this unique region. Among the architectural companies, there were also many opponents of the dam building. Tehri Damm is located in the earthquake-prone district. The last major earthquake happened here in 1991. Many construction workers consider the structure of the dam to be extremely unreliable. Nevertheless Tehri Damm has been working for almost 10 years. And nature in the surroundings of the complex attracts as many tourists as before. Next - Vajont Dam
