Taklimakan Desert, China
From series “Top 11 Most Unusual Deserts on the Planet”
One of the largest sandy deserts of the world is in China. Taklimakan occupies an area of about 270 000 square km. The length of this desert is 1 000 km and a width is 400 km. However, this desert is attractive not only for its impressive scale, but also because of the incredible snowy landscape. Despite the arid climate, it sometimes snows in the desert. Golden dunes covered with dazzling white snow look just amazing.
It is extremely difficult to predict this natural phenomenon. The last heavy snowfall occurred in the Taklimakan Desert in 2008. It was snowing continuously for 11 days. The lowest temperature in the history of the study of the desert have been recorded in that period. Given that the temperature in the desert rarely drops below +35 degrees Celsius, snowfalls seem a pure fantasy. If you won’t succeed in watching snow in the desert, don’t be upset. Taklimakan has many wonderful attractions at its barren landscape.
