From series “Top 11 Most Unusual Deserts on the Planet”
The Carcross Desert, which is officially the smallest in the world, is situated in Canada, Yukon. Its area is only 2.6 square km. You can walk around the whole area of the real desert in a couple of hours. Despite its modest scale, the Carcross Desert has all the features typical for larger deserts. Over millions of years, spectacular sand dunes formed under the influence of the dry climate and winds. The sparse vegetation conforms to generally accepted notions of the wilderness.
As researchers found out, this miniature desert appeared when glacier was moving. The climate in Yukon is a proof that sand dunes couldn’t form there under any other circumstances. The amazing desert terrain has being very popular among both among locals and travelers for a long time. Sandsurfing fans love to spend vacations there. Tourists are offered to take a ride over the unusual desert on the SUV.
