Chateau d Amboise, France
From series “The greatest France castles ”Year: 15 century.
Amboise Castle is the main historical symbol of the city of the same name. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Count Fulk “Nerra” was the first owner of the fortress. It was run by the Amboise family for a long time during the Middle Ages. The building acquired its present appearance at the end of the 15th century. Charles VIII was the owner of the castle during this period. He invited the best Italian architects and artists to carry out the reconstruction in his main residence. The Castle of Amboise acquired unique features of the Renaissance during this period.
The fortress remained a royal residence until the end of the 17th century. The interest of the royals in the castle gradually faded later. The historic building was badly damaged during the French Revolution. Many cultural and historical treasures stored in the castle were irretrievably lost. The history of the castle is inextricably connected with the name of the great artist Leonardo da Vinci. He spent the last years of his life in the castle. It was during this period that he painted the legendary "Gioconda". You can visit the tomb of the great artist in the castle chapel today.
