Hassan Tower, Morocco
From series “Famous unfinished buildings ”Year: 1195. Height: 86 m.
There is a symbolic historical monument in the Moroccan city of Rabat. It remained unfinished. This is Hassan Tower. It was built by order of Emir Yaqub al-Mansur in 1195. It was planned to build a tower with a height of 86 meters. It was supposed to be the tallest Islamic building in the region when completed. However, it was possible to complete the tower only to 44 meters. Its construction stopped after the death of the Emir in 1199.
In addition to the tower itself, it was also planned to build a large mosque. But this project of the Emir was also not destined to be realized. The total area of the mosque according to the project was supposed to be about 25,000 square meters. Its construction also stopped after the death of the Emir. It was possible to build only part of the building. It was dismantled by locals afterward. They used stones to build their houses.
