Roughs Tower, United Kingdom
From series “Forbidden Construction Objects with Label "Access Denied"”
The Roughs Tower sea fortress, which represents an ancient sea platform, not far from the harbour town of Haridge, is a unique object. The platform was built during the Second World War for the protection of the port. And in 1967 a strange event happened to the former strategic object. The platform was captured by a retired Major Paddy Roy Bates, who proclaimed the captured fortress as an independent principality of Sealand.
The invaders failed to achieve recognition of the state. For many years the major himself and his family lived on the platform. During this time, strangers never managed to set foot on the territory of the fortress. There have been cases when residents of the unrecognized state fired passing ships. The creation of the principality on an abandoned sea platform is considered one of the most amazing adventures of the past century. The founder of the state spent 40 years of life on the platform, during this time he managed to earn a good fortune.
