Staronova Synagoga, Czech Republic
From series “The most luxury and famous synagogues”Year: 13 century.
Staronova synagogue is located in Prague. It is one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. It existed in the 13th century. Initially, the synagogue was a small wooden structure. The miniature prayer house could no longer accommodate everyone after the Jewish community increased in the city. The elders decided to build a new stone synagogue. Many interesting legends are associated with the place where the religious monument is located today.
An old foundation was found at the construction site. According to one legend, angels brought stones for it to the bank of Vltava. These stones were part of a temple destroyed in Jerusalem in the past. Subsequently, the majestic synagogue went through many difficult times. It managed to survive during severe fires only by a miracle. The building also survived a large-scale slum clearance. It took place in the 19th century. Many ornaments were brought to the house of worship in the 13th century. They have also been preserved to this day.
