Ohel Jakob Synagogue, Germany
From series “The most luxury and famous synagogues”Year: 2005. Height: 28 m.
The main synagogue in Munich is called Ohel Jacob. It also forms a single complex with a major cultural center. The synagogue itself is quite small. Its prayer hall is designed for 600 people. The cultural center has a chic modern design and impressive scale, on the contrary. Art exhibitions, book presentations, and even music concerts are held there.
The so-called "Corridor of Memory" connects the Ohel Jacob synagogue with the cultural center. It is a kind of historical monument. It is dedicated to members of the local Jewish community who died during World War II. More than 4,500 people were killed by the Nazis in wartime only by approximate estimates. A new synagogue was built in Munich in 2005. It is located in an unusual building with a regular cubic shape. The upper part of the building is completely made of glass. The height of the building is 28 meters. This unusual structure of the building has its symbolic meaning. Its lower part is made of stone. It symbolizes the Wailing Wall. The upper part is made of glass. It is reminiscent of traditional "Ohel" tents. The Jews used them during their wanderings in the desert.
