The first gold deposits in the territory of the current industrial region were discovered in 2002. Three years later the mine was completely finished. The extraction of gold at the deposit is conducted in an open way. About 2000 people are constantly employed in industrial work. The latter express their dissatisfaction with the underreported wages, as well as the apparent shortage of employees. Environmentalists are also carefully monitoring compliance with precautionary measures. In 2014, the newspaper La Republica reported the pollution of the area of La Libertad.
