Goncalo de Carvalho Street, Brazil
From series “Top 13 Most Fantastic and Colorful Streets and Quarters”Lenght: 500 meters.
In the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre there is an amazing street Goncalo de Carvalho. Its length is 500 meters. Both sides of the street are decorated with tall trees, crowns of which merge to form an incredibly beautiful natural arch. If you look at this street from a bird's-eye view, it will seem that instead of the busy highway a carpet of green leaves lies there. Huge Tipuana trees were planted along the road more than 80 years ago. Over the decades, they have grown to an impressive size. Closely intertwined branches form a natural canopy over one of the most bustling and busy city streets.
Today, an amazing street Goncalo de Carvalho is a landmark of national importance. In 2005, it was threatened with destruction. It was decided to build a shopping center not far from the street. Mighty trees were detaining from construction. Local residents asked the city authorities to keep the old street and its trees. Now this place is one of the most visited city attractions.
