The Egyptian city of Sohag is considered to be a real Christian open-air museum. Numerous religious sites with a long history are situated there. This is a beautiful modern city with lively streets and spectacular architecture. Here, Christian shrines can be seen along with the majestic mosques. There are several monasteries and temples. The most famous monastery is Anba Beshoy and the church of St. Psoy situated on its territory.
The exact history of the emergence of religious sites is unknown. Using the available manuscripts, researchers only found out that shrines were built in the 5th century. After more than 1 500 years, the old monastery has survived perfectly. A series of unique Christian jewels were preserved in its walls. Visitors of the old monastery will be able to see the triple sanctuary with well-preserved altar ledges and niches, as well as to admire the luxurious finish of the church and paintings on walls.
