Mahaparinirvana and Parinirvana Stupa Temple, India
From series “The Surviving Artifacts of Buddhist Civilization”Year: 5 - 3 centuries BC,.
Mahaparinirvana temple and Parinirvana Stupa are located in the Indian city of Kushinagar. These sights are usually regarded as a single point of interest, as they are very near to each other. The small town of Kushinagar is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world. According to the legends, it is here that Gautama Buddha attained parinirvana. Heyday of the town came in the 5-3 century BC. During the reign of King Ashoka, multiple viharas and stupas were built on its territory.
The city flourished until the 12th century BC, and then was abandoned and forgotten. Many of its unique religious sites have been lost forever. In the late 19th century, the ancient city attracted archaeologists that began excavation. As a result many priceless artifacts, including the ruins of the temple and Mahaparinirvana Parinirvana Stupa, were found. That significant event happened in 1876. The building was completely renovated in 1956. The stupa, which was built more than 2 300 years ago, was reconstructed earlier, in 1927.
