One of the most interesting lighthouses in Estonia is the lighthouse "Kopu Tuletorn". It is a historical place which is open for tourists. This tower is the highest in the Baltic Sea, its height is over 100 meters. It is hard to believe but this magnificent building dates back to 1530 year. The lighthouse was located on Hiiumaa island. The tower has been built for a quarter of the century. The lighthouse "Kopu Tuletorn" is one of the oldest lighthouses in the world.

Kopu Tuletorn, Estonia The main feature of the lighthouse is the lighting system. There it has passed the whole route of evolution. Originally the lighthouse was lighted just with a wooden fire, later with the coal and various tars. A real step forward was when the oils began to be used in the lightning. Later for long-lasting and continuous lightning were used kerosene lamps. Only in 1970 the power transmission line was traced.

For locals the lighthouse "Kopu Tuletorn" is the main object of the cultural heritage. You can see the image of the lighthouse on memorable cards, anniversary coins, postage stamps. Unfortunately, the lighthouse has been destroying year by year and no one reconstruction could save it from the process of the destruction. Every year the remote and restoration works are held there. These works help to save some parts of the lighthouse, other parts are lost forever. According to this, tourists can visit this tower only from the 1st May until the middle of September.
