Neftegorsk, Russia
From series “Abandoned Places of the Earth with Distinct Marks of Civilization”
There are many ghost towns in Russia. Once, they were full of life. One of these cities is Neftegorsk. For many of its residents, this thriving industrial city was a last refuge. The reason for that was the devastating earthquake that happened here in 1995. Its capacity was estimated at 10 points on the Richter scale. Only several buildings survived after an earthquake. The city was completely ruined. After a terrible tragedy, a large memorial complex was built at the site of the destroyed residential area. Today, it is one of the country's most important monuments.
The ghost town doesn’t lose popularity among travelers. It is visited by representatives of various youth subcultures, as well as creative people that are inspired for creation of artistic and literary masterpieces. Strolling through the streets, you can see those of the few buildings that have managed to survive after the devastating disaster. It is very dangerous to enter them and stand close to major edifices and undamaged structures, because they can turn into a mountain of rubbish at any time. Next - Time Beach
