From series “Famous Abandoned Military Bases and Forts”

France still has a historical military object, which is worth seeing for all fans of exciting excursions. The complex of the fortifications under the generic name Maginot Line was built in the 30s of the last century and stretched along the borders with Switzerland, Germany and Luxembourg. The decision to build a large military complex was made by the authorities of France, due to the experience of the First World War. In many respects it was due to the endeavor to secure the neutrality of Belgium in the event of war operations.

Maginot Line, France During the Second World War, the Maginot Line turned out to be absolutely useless from the strategic standpoint. The defense system had been stormed by the German troops from the rear, and was easily taken. Most interesting to the contemporaries are the ruins of military projects preserved in the territory of the large complex. Some forts were almost not damaged.

The underground Fort Schonenbourg, the only fort of the complex where the museum was opened, is one of the most interesting and most visited objects of the complex. Visitors can walk through the entire territory of the fort, look at the furnishings and the museum pieces presented in the blocks. The complex contained 39 defense installations, more than 70 bunkers and some 500 infantry and artillery blocks. On its territory there were 500 casemates, as well as numerous secret observatories. It will take several days to get acquainted with all the sights of this military base. Next - Nekoma Base
