Washington Dulles International Airport is situated 42 kilometres west of Washington. It became operational in 1962. The airport got its original name from the President John Kennedy, but in 1984 it was renamed in honour of the Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. It is one of the three major airports, servicing Washington. The airport handles both domestic and international flights. The passenger traffic makes up roughly 23 million people a year. The airport has 4 runways. It consists of one main and 2 satellite terminals with Concourses A/B and C/D.

You can get to the airport from the city or vice versa by taxi, bus or underground. Bus stop is located near the fourth gate of the arrival hall. Routes 981 and 983 go to the cities of Herndon and Reston (the Wiehle – Reston East Metro station). The "Express 5A" Metrobus will take you to the Herndon–Monroe park and the Rosslyn metro station in Arlington. Washington Flyer's Silver Line Express bus operates between the airport and the Wiehle – Reston East Metro station.

Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car

You can hire a vehicle with the help of such companies as Advantage Rent A Car, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, National, Dollar, and Thrifty. The car rental office is located outside the terminal building, next to the economy parking. All the companies work round the clock.

Free shuttles take clients from the terminals to the car rental facilities. The shuttles, going to the car rental parking, correspond to the vehicle rental company, so you should look for a shuttle with the logo of the company you need. Shuttles stop on the roadside beneath signs 2F and 2C. You should go down from the baggage claim area through the arrival gates to the lower level, from where the shuttles depart.

Besides, you can book a car in advance. In order to do this, you should take advantage of any online service or use the special form on the website of the airport. To obtain a car, you need a voucher with the order number (in case the reservation was made in good time), an international driver's license, and a credit or debit card. Note that debit cards are accepted by not all the companies. You can get your vehicle in the car park of the terminal. Alternatively, a free shuttle can take you to the place of receiving a car. This service is provided, inter alia, by Avis and Budget. After you return the car to the parking lot of a vehicle rental company, a free shuttle will get you to the terminal you need.

Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby

The airport encompasses several types of car parks. They are an hourly paid parking lot, a daily paid parking lot, two parking garages and economy parking. Valet parking services are provided in the short term hourly paid parking lot. The parking garages are connected to the main terminal by covered walkways. Besides this, buses carry passengers between the terminal and the parking garages (look for signs 2D and 2E on the roadside). Parking spaces for people with disabilities are available upon prior request.

The majority of the hotels located not far from the airport offer not only free shuttle service, but also free parking for their clients. These include Staybridge Suites Chantilly, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Washington Dulles Marriott Suites, and SpringHill Suites.
