All serious traffic violations bring not only fines, but also special penalty points. Upon reaching a critical level of these penalty points, the driving license is temporarily suspended.
Drivers are allowed to get no more than 12 penalty points a year. Note that for certain serious traffic violations the offender will receive as many as 6 points. Passing a yellow or red light is one of these violations.
There is also a number of violations that have the immediate cancellation of the driving license as punishment. These are driving under the influence of alcohol, the use of false number plates and leaving the scene of the accident.
