When hiring a budget hatchback, it is definitely worth saving on insurance deposit (franchise). Deposits on small cars in Bulgaria vary from 100 to 1.000 euro/dollars. Check the rental conditions of each car in your selection to find a vehicle with a minimum deposit.

If your routes in Bulgaria are foreseen to pass through hilly areas or mountains, it is not recommended to consider very small cars for rental. Their engines are usually insufficient for a confident driving on the roads with long or steep climbs.

At the rental office in Sofia, consider to take a 'Breakdown Assistance' package or ask an officer for a contact data to use in case of a vehicle breakdown. Cheap cars are sometimes unpredictable in operation.

Driving Advices for Bulgaria – Traffic Regulations and Road Usage Peculiarities
Previous hints
The minimum allowed speed on the highway is 50 km/h. If you drive slower than 50 km/h without a particular reason (for example, your car is broken and it cannot move faster), then it is considered a serious violation. However, in some pedestrian zones the maximum allowed speed is only 20 km/h.
Local petrol stations sell diesel fuel and unleaded gasoline (95 and 98). Drivers are allowed to carry up to 10 liters of petrol in the car. Gas filling stations are also common in Bulgaria, but it will be rather difficult to find one away from big cities, as they are not very common in the country.
Your car must be supplied with a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, a warning triangle and a reflective vest. The latter is needed if your car breaks down on a highway - going out of the car on a highway is strictly prohibited without a reflective vest.

Sightseeing of Sofia, Bulgaria

Bulgaria's capital, Sofia is a city rich in history, many notable places and spectacular natural landscapes.

In the center of town is located Slaveykov Square, from which diverge beautiful boulevards and avenues in different directions just like sun rays. The city’s downtown is a pedestrian zone, so nothing will prevent tourists and local residents from unhurried walks and enjoying the magnificence of the local nature. There are also several office buildings around the square. These are the real examples of modern architecture.

Those, who like shopping, should go to Vitosha Boulevard, which is considered the main shopping street of the city. In addition to shops and souvenir outlets you will find here several cozy restaurants and cafes. While walking, you'll be truly surprised to see such a large number of monuments right at every step.
St. George Church is the symbol of the "Old Sofia", which was built in the 6th century. During its 15 century-long history the building has been reconstructed many times. In the 16th century it was even converted into a mosque by the Turks. Today the church is decorated with magnificent frescoes, which imprint the most important historical events and images of saints. Alexander Battenberg Square is also the right location for visitors who enjoy seeing architectural places of interest. Church of St. Nicholas is surely the main decoration of this place. The building of the royal palace is located just opposite to the church. The palace is surrounded by gigantic trees and flower beds. This city is also home to one of the main Christian churches - St. Sophia Cathedral. The construction of this building was started by the Romans in the 7th century. Nowadays only the floor of the church decorated with mosaics reminds of those times. The facade and rooms have been rebuilt several times, leading to a unique combination of various architectural trends.
