Luanda has preserved interesting historical monuments, and one of the main symbols of the capital is the ancient Fortress of Sao Miguel. The defensive structure built on the side of Mount São Paulo is the oldest in Angola. Its construction began at the end of the 16th century and continued for several decades. In the first half of the 17th century, it was first subjected to serious attacks. During this period, the castle protected the surrounding territory from the Dutch conquerors who have never succeeded for more than 40 years.
The fort remained impregnable and was completely reconstructed after this period. Today, the historic monument houses an interesting military museum. It stores old weapons and military uniforms, old maps and documents related to military periods. The cultural center often hosts thematic programs on the history of Angola.

Among the colonial architecture preserved in the city, the beautiful Se Catedral de Sao Salvador de Luanda stands out. It is located on one of the picturesque historic streets of the capital. The magnificent cathedral of the second half of the 17th century is striking with its unique architectural style. Its entrance is now adorned with skillful pediments just like in old times. Many pristine decoration elements have also been preserved inside. The city's most beautiful temple was built with the support of wealthy local merchants.
