The Curonian Spit, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the most popular places for active tourism in Lithuania. There are 6 pedestrian routes for tourists wishing to get acquainted with this unique natural object. The longest route stretches for 4 km. It’s called the Lake Swan. The trail is laid along unique sand dunes, some of which are the highest in the world. The final point of the excursion is located on the observation deck at an altitude of 55 meters at the top of the Deer Buda dune. Another route passes through the Dancing Forest. Coniferous trees here have bizarre curved trunks. In the basal part of the Curonian Spit, there is a path called Royal Bor. It passes through a centuries-old boron and meadows adjoining the Gulf. Several centuries ago, there was a royal falconry in these places.
Great opportunities for active tourism are available in the national park of Aukštajt. It has a huge number of rivers and lakes with fascinating trails. The greatest value for tourists is climbing Ladakalnis Hill. Its name means the ice mountain if translated from Lithuanian. The hill is relatively low, only 175 meters above sea level. From this place, you can see 6 large lakes located on the territory of the national park. This site was considered sacred by the Slavic tribes. Rites of worship to the goddess Lada, the mother of all living things, were held there. Water tourism is widely developed on local lakes. Scuba diving is another option for active recreation in Lithuania. In winter, the temperature of the Baltic Sea can drop to 5C. However, this does not stop divers. One of the most amazing places for diving is in Kaunas. Kaunas forts, flooded in the early 20th century, are among the most unusual dive sites in Europe. You won’t find unique underwater inhabitants, but you can make an incredible and exciting walk along the underwater tunnels and corridors. Lake Plateliai is popular among divers. It features the sunken yacht, the ruins of an ancient bridge, crosses, and sculptures from an ancient castle. An excellent visibility and good conditions make diving comfortable even for beginners.
